Luna + Hill is a shop with heart and soul and a story to tell.
The romantic journey that led husband and wife, Chris and Amy to create Luna + Hill began when they were both just 14 years old. They met in school, fell in love, and have been together ever since. Chris is a practicing lawyer in Saskatoon and, prior to opening the shop, Amy taught History at Mount Royal Collegiate. While she enjoyed her profession, Amy could never shake that "what if" feeling.
"What if I were to open a shop that is a true expression of myself, my values and offer a little something more to the beautiful community of Saskatoon?"
"A friend of mine told me 'Have the courage to live the life you were meant to lead' and shortly after that I started working on Luna + Hill. Thanks Mr. Ryan Leier!"
Inside Luna + Hill Saskatoon
At their pioneer location at 208 3rd Avenue South, Chris and Amy have created a warm and laid back “West Coast” atmosphere that was developed when the couple was on a research trip to California.
"We jumped in our little car and headed down to California. We spent time in San Francisco meeting with local boutique owners and breathing in something different. We took two months driving up the 101 through the beautiful port towns and into amazing cities such as Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. We spent time in the Ancient Redwood Forest which is very inspiring and we have dedicated parts of the store to the beauty that we experienced there".
Amy & Chris believe in making mindful choices when it comes to the brands they buy and the clothes they wear. Luna + Hill is an expression of that mindfulness. The shop supports lines that are Canadian-made, use organic agricultural processes, dedicate portions of what they make to interesting charities, are local, handmade and lines that encourage a thoughtful lifestyle.

SMARTSHOPPER: What's the story behind the name Luna + Hill?
AMY: We take inspiration from many things but the voice of Julia Butterfly Hill has had quite an impact on me. She is an incredible environmentalist and activist that has dedicated her life to the prevention of clear cutting of ancient forests. She lived in a 1500 year old giant redwood for 738 days to prevent it from being cut down by the Pacific Lumber Company and shares her message of how we have become very disconnected from everything around us. I met her last year in Vancouver and walked straight up to her and told her that she kicked soo much ass! Hill is her last name and Luna was the name of the tree that she saved. Many people also see Chris and I through the names Luna + Hill. I represent the Luna being the more whimsical and "spacey" one and Chris is definitely the more grounded and earthy one between the two of us. Our tag line and reminder "Be Brave. Be Kind." comes to us from our favorite band The National.

SMARTSHOPPER: How would you describe your fashion/shopping or style philosophy?
AMY: Invest in quality pieces that you are absolutely in love with. You should come out of the change room feeling amazing and if you don't get that exciting butterfly then it isn't the right piece.
Buy quality timeless pieces that you will love for a long time.

SMARTSHOPPER: What are your favorite fashion trends right now?
AMY: OH how I love fall fashion. Layers upon layers of beautiful clothing. A comfortable chunky sweater (Elroy), beautiful wool coat (Dagg & Stacey does it right), a handmade scarf, killer tights (Stewart + Brown peacock print leggings) and some amazing boots from the lovely gals at Swank! Perfection!

SMARTSHOPPER: There are a lot of really great handmade and "reclaimed" projects in the store, even your exterior sign is handmade. Who is the creative genius?
AMY: Luna + Hill is truly the shop that love bulit! Chris and I have had an amazing time piecing together the atmosphere that has created Luna + Hill. It meant alot to us to be a part of every detail in the shop from the reclaimed elevator wood stage and tables, the antique tile wall displays, the pictures of our ancestors that adorn the frames, old fences used as jewelry displays and rock collections from our friends parents garage. We are both fairly creative people but when you have an avenue to express what you are passionate about, the wheels just start spinning! Putting these touches in the shop made the space more personal and inviting.
